When Interior Design Moves Outdoors: The Art of Designing Exteriors That Speak Your Story

Let’s get one thing straight: interior designers don’t stop at the front door.

When done right, the exterior of a home doesn’t just complement the interior, it continues the narrative. It’s the first impression, and in many cases (hello, poolside cocktails and sundown views), the most lived-in “room” of the house.

In our Cabo project as many others, we were brought in to design beyond the walls. Much of the exterior space can and should fall under a designer’s eye. From hardscape finishes to rooflines, these elements all play a part in the symphony that is great design. Let’s break it down:

1. Paint Palette + Architectural Color Story

The exterior palette isn’t just about picking a white. It's about selecting the right white — one that complements the light, the shadows, and the environment. In coastal areas like Cabo, we’re balancing warmth, reflectivity, and how that tone plays with the desert sun or ocean mist. We also consider:

• Accent colors for trim and shutters

• Texture and finish (matte vs satin)

• How colors change throughout the day

2. Roofing Tile + Fascia Details

Your roof isn’t just functional, it’s a massive visual component of your home’s architecture. With our coastal projects, we are assessing for style and durability. Does a cedar shake tile give us the look and maintenance we are looking for? Is a composite tile material the best option for hurricane resistance? Is a metal roof the main attraction or used on accessory structures as accent? We often weigh in on:

• Roof tile shape, color, and finish

• Fascia width, paint treatment, and integration

• How these choices tie in with interior ceiling heights and architectural sightlines

3. Pavers + Pool Coping + Waterline Tile

The “flooring” of the exterior spaces gets the same love we give interior finishes. From custom-cut pavers that feel great underfoot, to bullnose pool coping that provides seamless edge flow, we select:

• Color and material based on local climate and use

• Waterline tiles that reflect sky tones and balance the pool’s visual weight

• Stair bullnose details for both safety and design continuity

4. Lighting & Shadow Play

Exterior lighting isn’t just about brightness. It’s about mood, safety, and rhythm. We place lighting with intention to highlight:

• Architectural elements and foliage (*hint hint - uplighting plants and foliage is an instant style updgrade)

• Shadow lines from railings and overhangs

5. Accessory Structures + Spatial Flow

Whether it’s a pergola, outdoor shower, guest casita, or built-in kitchen, these are design extensions, not afterthoughts. We ensure:

• Alignment with interior sightlines

• Material and color continuity

• Functional flow that matches how you actually live

6. Railing Systems + Stair Design

This is where function and aesthetics hold hands. Railings and stairs should feel like natural extensions of the architecture. In Cabo, where the views are everything, we often use:

• Glass or minimalist metal railings to avoid blocking the sightline

• Bullnose or custom-finish stair treads that mirror interior stair treatments

• Integration with landscape lighting or planter beds for a layered look

7. Shutters + Decorative Millwork

Shutters offer more than just charm, they’re part of the language of the home. Whether operable or fixed, they:

• Enhance window proportions

• Add depth and color contrast

• Are selected in materials that handle sun, salt, or wind

8. Downspouts + Rain Chains (Yes, They Matter)

Let’s talk drainage (the sexy stuff). You wouldn’t believe how many homes go from high-end to haphazard with a cheap downspout decision.

• Custom-painted downspouts can disappear or accent

• Rain chains can double as functional sculpture

• We align these with wall joints or hide within architectural forms whenever possible

9. Landscaping + Lighting Integration

Landscape is your home’s outermost layer of texture. But it’s also strategic. From tall palms for drama to desert shrubs that hug the ground plane, we always consult with the landscape team to layer in:

• Low-maintenance greenery that belongs to the environment with furnishings that make sense for comfort and style

• Path lighting that leads without over-illuminating (turtle lighting of course for our beach front properties)

• Plantings that cast shadows onto hardscape (designers love shadows)
