Restoring the Narrative: A Historic West Tampa Office Renovation
In the heart of Historic West Tampa, surrounded by cigar factories turned gathering spaces and brick-lined streets that still echo the rhythm of industry, we had the privilege of collaborating on a commercial office renovation. The design celebrates the past while shaping a purposeful future.
At Ponton Interiors, collaboration is one of our core values and this project embodied that philosophy from day one.
Honoring the Architecture Through Collaboration
This renovation was a true partnership between our team and the project architect. From the earliest walk-through, it was clear the building had a story to tell—one layered in time, texture, and craftsmanship. Rather than imposing a new identity, our shared goal was to uncover and amplify what was already there.
Working side by side, we evaluated every original element: what could be restored, what could be revealed, and how new interventions could feel intentional rather than intrusive. That collaborative dialogue allowed us to approach the space holistically—architecture and interiors speaking the same language.
Behind layers of drywall and years of wear, we discovered beautiful original brick. Carefully restored and sealed, it became the emotional anchor of the office.
Brick brings warmth, authenticity, and texture - subtle color variations and timeworn imperfections ground modern furnishings and provide visual depth throughout the workspace.
In a commercial environment, materials must perform as beautifully as they present. By preserving the original brick, we not only reduced material waste but created a durable surface that will age gracefully alongside the business it houses.
Equally impactful were the building’s original metal elements—structural columns, beams, and architectural details that spoke to West Tampa’s industrial roots. Rather than concealing them, we refined and reintroduced them as defining features.
We balanced these raw metals with intentional contrasts: warm wood tones, layered textiles, and curated lighting. The result is a dynamic interplay between strength and softness—an environment that feels grounded yet forward-thinking.
Designing for Modern Work, Rooted in History
While honoring history was central, the space ultimately needed to function as a contemporary office. We thoughtfully integrated:
Flexible workstations that support collaboration
Private offices that maintain visual continuity with glass and steel detailing
Layered lighting to enhance both productivity and ambiance
Acoustical solutions that respect the open structure without compromising comfort
Every decision—down to the hardware finishes—was evaluated through two lenses: Does it respect the building’s heritage? and Does it serve the client’s day-to-day needs?
A Space That Tells a Story
Historic renovations require restraint. It can be tempting to over-polish or over-modernize, but we believe the beauty lies in contrast and conversation. The restored brick, exposed metal, and preserved architectural character now coexist with refined furnishings and intentional design details.
The result is more than a commercial office—it is a space that connects employees and visitors to the legacy of West Tampa while supporting the evolving story of the business within it.
This balance between narrative and functionality reflects our core values of collaboration, curation, and innovation .
